Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions about ordering, paint matching, application, safety, and support.
Getting Started & Expectations
Can I really apply touch up paint myself and get good results?
Yes. With proper preparation, practice, and patience, most customers can achieve very good results using touch up paint.
What is the most important rule before applying touch up paint?
Always practice off the vehicle first. Complete all steps on a test surface before applying paint to your car.
Will my repair be invisible?
Small repairs on solid colors can blend extremely well. Metallic and larger repairs may still be visible upon close inspection.
Is it better to leave a scratch alone than try to fix it?
No. Exposed scratches can lead to rust and further damage. Even a basic repair is better than leaving bare surfaces exposed.
Choosing the Right Product
Which touch up paint product should I use?
Choose based on repair size:
- Paint Pen: very small chips and scratches
- Brush Bottle: small repairs (up to a dime)
- Spray Can: larger areas and metallic finishes
- Professional Sizes: full panels or full vehicle painting
Why shouldn’t I use a paint pen or brush on larger areas?
Pens and brushes can cause uneven coverage and darker-looking metallic paint. Spraying produces a more even finish.
Paint Matching & Color Codes
How do I know I’m ordering the correct color?
Always verify your paint code on your vehicle. Color names and images on the site are for reference only.
The paint name on your site is different than mine. Is it still correct?
Yes. Paint names can change, but if the paint code matches, it is the correct color.
What if I can’t find my paint code or color listed?
You can submit a color request or contact support for assistance. Custom matching may be recommended in some cases.
I found my paint code, but there's no matching paint on this site.
If you know your paint code, but we don't have a matching paint listed on our site, don't worry! Simply fill out a Missing Color Request and we can mix a custom match.
Tricoat Paints
What is a tricoat finish?
A tricoat finish uses three layers: a basecoat, a translucent midcoat, and a clearcoat to create depth and special effects.
How do I know if my paint is a tricoat?
If the word “Tricoat” appears in the paint name on our site, your color requires a tricoat process.
Are tricoat paints harder to apply?
Yes. Tricoat paints require more skill and practice due to the additional layer. Some customers choose professional application.
Preparation & Application Basics
Do I need primer?
It depends on your damage. Primer is required on any bare metal, plastic, rubber, or repaired surface.
Do I need clearcoat?
Always. Clearcoat protects the color and restores gloss. Without it, paint will appear dull and will not match the surrounding original paint.
Can I paint over existing paint?
Yes, if the surface is clean, properly sanded, and compatible. Recently repainted surfaces should always be tested first.
Environmental Conditions
What temperature and conditions are best for painting?
Paint should be applied in dry conditions, out of direct sunlight. Spray paint requires warmer temperatures than pens or brushes.
Can humidity affect my results?
Yes. High humidity can cause haze, streaks, and poor drying.
Finishing, Drying & Waxing
Why doesn’t my paint shine right away?
Clearcoat must be polished with rubbing compound after drying to restore gloss.
When can I wax my vehicle after touch up paint?
Wait at least 30 days before waxing to allow the paint to fully cure.
Storage & Shelf Life
How long does touch up paint last?
When stored properly, paint pens and bottles can last years. Spray cans and larger sizes can last several years.
How should I store my paint?
Store paint in a cool, dry place. Do not store it in a vehicle or expose it to heat or freezing temperatures.
Safety & Handling
Is automotive paint hazardous?
Yes. Automotive paint products are hazardous and must be used with proper ventilation and protective equipment.
What safety equipment should I use?
Use an approved automotive respirator, safety goggles, gloves, and protective clothing.
Common Problems
Why does metallic paint sometimes look darker?
Metallic flakes don’t lay evenly when applied with a pen or brush, making the color appear darker. Spraying and blending produces superior results.
Why is my paint peeling or flaking?
Peeling is usually caused by poor surface preparation, missing primer, or lack of adhesion promoter on non-metal surfaces.
What causes haze, bubbles, or streaks?
These issues are typically caused by contamination, humidity, or improper drying conditions.
Ordering & Shipping
Can my order be expedited or shipped overnight?
No. Automotive paint is hazardous and therefore must legally ship via ground service.
How are orders shipped?
Spray cans and larger sizes ship via UPS Ground. Paint pens and touch up bottles ship via USPS First Class or Parcel Post.
Returns, Replacements & Guarantees
What if the paint doesn’t match or arrives damaged?
Submit a support request with photos. A paint technician will review your case and issue a replacement or refund if appropriate.
Do I need to return items before receiving a refund or replacement?
No. Start the process by submitting photos and details.
How long does the review process take?
Most cases are reviewed within two business days.
